A great deal of Draper housing is recent, built up the bench over the past few decades, and newer construction in Salt Lake County frequently includes a passive radon rough-in. That is a pipe run from beneath the slab, up through the interior of the house, and out through the roof, installed while the framing was still open. No fan, no power, no controls, just a path. It costs a builder very little to include and is considerably cheaper than retrofitting the same pipe later. If your home has one, much of the physical work of a mitigation system is already sitting inside your walls.
Finding out whether you have one is usually a matter of looking. In the basement or the garage, a capped or labeled pipe rising out of the slab is the giveaway. In the attic, look for a vertical pipe with no plumbing fixtures feeding it that runs to a roof penetration. Some builders label it clearly and many do not. Original plans, if you kept them, may show it. A rough-in is a convenience rather than a result: it is a pathway waiting to be used, and it tells you nothing about the level in your house. That still comes from a test.
Activating a passive rough-in means adding the part the builder left out. A fan goes into the run, typically in the attic or on the exterior and never in conditioned space, so that any leak in the pressurized section discharges outside rather than back into the house. Homes on the bench and homes on flatter ground alike sit on soil, and what is in that soil varies from lot to lot. Levels vary house by house, and the result you can rely on is a measurement taken inside your own home.
A short-term test is the quickest way to get a first number, and a long-term test better reflects an annual average, since levels swing with season and with how a house is run.
